Photogenic Showers + Time Lapse!

On October 19, 2013 I awoke to a patch of cumulus outside my window that looked somewhat photogenic. I drove to one of my favorite spots to better photograph them. Little did I know that I would be there for 2-4 hours snapping photos and recording videos for time lapse. Once the photogenic showers began, they just didn’t stop. One after the other, photo opportunities all around. Not only did I get to see rain showers, but I was also treated to a weak ragged shelf cloud along an outflow boundary. I was also treated to a large flock of Geese, and also several small flocks of Cranes. I did get photos of them, and videos too (videos of the Geese and Cranes will be posted at a later time. Look for them at THIS LINK). All in all it was a great day. The sunshine definitely played a role, more that just the destabilization, but also accented the scenes well. Below is a time lapse video of the rain … Read More…

Another Beautiful Sunset (Time Lapse Video + Photos)

Back to back gorgeous sunsets on 8/8/13 and 8/9/13. What more could a photographer ask for? I was out riding my bike at the time. I didn’t have my tripod with me, so for the video I just steadied my camera on my bicycle’s seat cushion. The angle was actually pretty good at accenting the sunset, so I’m not disappointed. Photos and videos are below. I captured some pretty cloud scenes before the sunset as well. It was definitely great to experience. Feel free to share this article around! … Read More…

Beautiful Sunset 8/8/13

August 8, 2013 – I was treated to some nice cloudscapes, including an absolutely beautiful sunset. I decided to take the opportunity to capture things in a different light than usual. I was out riding my bike, and knew from looking at the approaching high clouds that the sunset would be quite a nice show. I rode up to one of my favorite spots in the country to capture what was to come. Slowly but surely the colors began to appear, and they became brighter, and deeper. I decided to go for many shots, including some new things like using my bicycle as a prop. I captured a photo I call “Cycling Dreams” and it has really taken off over on my facebook page. This photo is one of my favorites, because of all the emotions that come with it for many different people, from all walks of life. Cycling is a way to get back with nature, it is a way to stay in shape, to commute, to recreate, … Read More…

Severe Thunderstorm, Rainbow, Sunset, and Sky 6/17/13

June 17, 2013 – I was tracking the potential for storms all day long, in hopes that something would either fire along the cold front close enough to my chase range, or survive the trip across Lake Michigan and allow me to get out ahead of it. The latter scenario began to take shape, and I headed out to a favorite spot of mine with fields like that of the central plains. The storm was severe warned primarily for the potential for gusty winds, and some hail. The storm remained a single cell with one parent updraft through the majority of it’s lifetime. It was fairly high based as well, with some decent structure. I was able to obtain some good shots during the storm’s passage, including the fantastic structure (by Michigan’s standards), a vivid rainbow, a nice sunset, and some nice updraft towers, etc. The storm dissipated and sort of became more of a squall line after it moved off to my ESE. I also captured some of the … Read More…

Corkscrew Vortex Contrail, Sunset, and Clouds

Contrails

On the evening of March 30, 2013, I noticed some contrails and high clouds at sunset. I decided to grab my camera and see what sort of things I could capture. Another large aircraft leaving a thick contrail behind it began to pass through an old diffusing contrail. This definitely made for a few nice photo opportunities. I was pleased with what I had shot, but it’s what I saw when I was reviewing my images later that night that really got me excited. Little did I know, the contrail from this larger plane turned into a long corkscrew vortex! If I had known this while I was shooting, I would have snapped more pictures, but this definitely came as a nice surprise to me. Sometimes a little boredom and some contrails can go a long way! I snapped 5 images in total. The images below are in order of me taking them. The 5th image is a cropped version of the 4th to show details. The corkscrew vortex is … Read More…

Moon Photos: My Best Moon Photo to Date!

Worm Moon

March is the month of the full “Worm Moon”. Other names it is commonly called include the “Storm Moon” or “Sap Moon”. You can read all about the Worm Moon by Clicking Here. See a list of moon names for 2013 by Clicking Here. Last night (3/30/13) I captured the best moon photo I have ever captured. I also captured several others, but this one in particular is my favorite of them all. The moon was very bright, so I was able to shoot with a lower ISO and F stop, and a higher shutter speed to reduce blur. The quality of these images was fantastic. My best set of moon images to date. I used my tripod for this occasion as well. This is turned out to be a successful test for my Canon PowerShot SX40 HS as well. I stretched the zoom thresholds way further than I normally do. The first image is the winner for my best shot ever of the moon. The second was shot at … Read More…

Sunset Icicles, Prism Effect, and More! (PHOTOS + VIDEO)

Icicles at Sunset

I have been watching closely for icicle photography opportunities this winter. On February 8th and 9th, I had two of my best icicle photography days ever. I even captured what I’m calling my “crown jewel” of icicle photos. Icicles At Sunset is by far, the best icicle photo I have ever captured. The colors, the lighting, the sharpness, just everything was absolutely perfect for this shot. I also was treated to a very nice Prism Effect with first one icicle, and then two at the same time! The icicles are gone now as we had some warmth and rain. But I will be watching closely for more opportunities to add to my icicle collection. Below are the images from February 8th and 9th in order of time/date. Below the photos is a short YouTube video of the Melting Icicles. Enjoy!! (Winter Photography Photo Gallery) … Read More…

Showers and Thunderstorms (PHOTOS + VIDEO)

Whew, it took hours to complete this blog, all the footage editing, uploading, linking, etc. Well worth it though! The image featured here is one of the absolutely most spectacular displays of Crepuscular Rays I have ever witnessed in my whole entire life. I started my day off well, planning to meet for lunch at Applebee’s with my good friend Cort Scholten. Cort’s a fellow weather nut, who studied Meteorology at CMU (Central Michigan University). He and I started chatting online in Bill’s Blog a few years ago, which is run by WOOD TV Chief Meteorologist Bill Steffen. Over the years, Cort and I have become quite good friends, like brothers really. He’s nowcasted for me on chases before as well. Of course, the day we plan lunch is the day that cumulus clouds start developing everywhere, fitting really when you think about it. Before I left the apartment I grabbed my camera, noticing the cumulus clouds trying to get their act together. Below are a few images I snapped … Read More…

Sun Rays and Cumulus Clouds (PHOTOS)

Over the course of past few months we have been enjoying mostly above average temperatures here in lower Michigan. The month of March 2012 has been no exception. In fact, not only are we enjoying above average temperatures, we are breaking all time records, and in some cases, simply destroying old records with ease. This is the earliest it’s ever been this warm since accurate records have been kept, which date back to the 1800s. It feels like May or June out there, hard to believe we are still in March. In fact, astronomically speaking, Spring only just began today (March 20, 2012) so when you think about it, the days we have had 60s, 70s, and 80s was during WINTER officially. With the warm air, enough moisture, and some instability, cumulus clouds can form, and they did on March 19, 2012. They weren’t real spectacular, but I dusted off the camera and snapped a few images of them. Here are the results, from Greenville, MI. Enjoy. … Read More…
