Fall Color Tour 2014

12/19/14 – This article is dedicated to my best Fall Color photos from this year’s Fall Color Tour. Autumn is one of my favorite seasons, for the changing colors, for the great Bass fishing before winter, and also for the ever changing weather conditions. We could have bright sunny days with warm temperatures, stormy days (including severe weather) or even snowy days. Autumn is a transitional time of year. My favorite things of all though, are the Fall Colors. Click Here to read all about the Fall Color process. It’s fascinating. This year’s foliage display was one to remember. It was one of the best that I have ever witnessed in my whole entire life. Only 2010 and 2008 come close. The best colors lasted for weeks! Great weather for getting out to enjoy them as well. I was able to do a lot of great things with my photography of the colors this season. So here on this last day of Fall, I present to you, Fall Color Tour … Read More…

Baldwin Lake Fall Colors

10/13/14 – This was a rainy day. Mild, but rainy. I decided it would be a good day to head out and shoot some Fall colors. I brought my fishing gear along as well to see if I could catch anything while I was there. What I didn’t know was, I was about to snap one of my very best Fall colors photos of all time. Foliage has always been a strong suit for me and my photography, so it’s not unusual for me to head out and find the best photo ops I can. Today was no different. As the showers moved through on and off throughout the day, I captured a few images of their results. Raindrops on the window, raindrops on the leaves, and then suddenly the sky just took on this amazing color and texture scheme. The sun began to shine through the clouds a bit too, which illuminated the sky, trees and helped enhance the reflection off of Baldwin Lake. This was truly a once … Read More…

Fall Colors At The Lakes

10/11/14 – This was an absolutely gorgeous day to be outdoors! Sunshine, warm temperatures, and hardly a cloud in the sky. I decided to head out to a couple of lakes to do some photography, and also some fishing. Though I didn’t catch much in the fish department, what I captured in photos was well worth the trip down there. Simply gorgeous conditions, bright and vivid Fall colors all around. I shot most of these images looking up into the trees. Something I have done before, but it never gets old. I started out at a lake I frequent for fishing and cycling. I snapped a few images of the water, including the sun shining down into the weed bed just off the dock. A few contrails made nice accents to the sky as well. After that, I moved on around the lake on my bicycle to shoot some Fall colors. I was able to see some stunning colors. After I was done there, I decided to head over to … Read More…

Potato Harvest, Bald Faced Hornets, and Early Fall Colors

9/23/14 – It was a beautiful day weather wise, so I decided to take my bicycle out for a ride around the area. At first, I found some nice flowers in the garden. As I rode down the road, I discovered a field which had been harvested. This was a potato field. Greenville, MI has a history in the potato farming industry. Area farmers grow potatoes for companies like Ore Ida, Frito Lay, Snyder’s and others. One of the most well known farms around these parts goes by the name of Sackett Potatoes. Since this was my first time ever actually witnessing a potato harvest, I decided to document some of it. The harvester dug up the potatoes, and then they travel up a conveyor belt, and into a truck to be hauled off to their destination at the factory for processing. I actually found some of the harvested potatoes on the roadside, so I picked up up and took they home to eat. They were delicious! You’ll see a … Read More…

A Beautiful Evening At Baldwin Lake

9/20/14 – Today was supposed to be a day of severe weather for most of the lower Michigan area, however, despite plenty of instability, shear, and other parameters in place, the severe weather remained to the south, and also east of west Michigan. Although initially rather disappointing, we did receive some beneficial rainfall from this system. Overall, the day went from mostly sunny, to rather gray, and wet. Once I decided that all of the storms would miss my area, I decided to head down to the lake to do some fishing in the rain. Fishing wasn’t very productive, so I started exploring nature a bit. In doing so, I found a frog, and a beautiful Monarch Butterfly! I’m thinking this Monarch was a female, based on how fat it was. The Monarch was down near the water, and was nearly falling in, so I picked it up and moved it, but not before getting some photos and video of this lovely insect. It’s been awhile since I handled a … Read More…

Early Spring Cycling Adventure

GREENVILLE, MI – Went for a good bike ride on March 31, 2014, making 2 days in a row of cycling. 3/31/14 was the first time we’ve seen 60F temperatures since November 17, 2013! If you remember, we had a severe weather outbreak that day. That was not so this time. It was breezy, but that didn’t take away from the warm air much. I started out on paved roads, but then ended up on this dirt road, which I frequent for it’s tranquility and good visibility. Along the roadway, I found a long pile of plowed snow. This snow was 3-4 feet tall in spots. There was still snow in the fields, and the road was very muddy. I couldn’t ride very far. Once the road really started getting bad, I stopped and turned around. But not before getting some photos and a quick video showing the road conditions, and also the long snow pile. I also found a pair of Geese in the field. All in all a … Read More…

The Robins Have Arrived

The Robins Have Arrived! It has been a long winter indeed here in Michigan, but the Robins and other springtime birds are arriving in full force. I have been fortunate to be in a location that seems to be a bit of a hot spot for Robin activity. Since much of the ground is still frozen for the most part (though that changes this week) worms are few and far between. However, the Robins have been feasting primarily on Crabapples. We have several Crabapple trees on the property, and they produced a bumper crop of Crabapples last Autumn. So many in fact, that the trees were weighted down by the extensive volume of the fruit! Even though I saw a few Robins in both January, and February, the largest number of them have been spotted within the last week or two of March. The American Robin is Michigan’s state bird. You can read all about the American Robin by Clicking Here. For many years, Robin sightings have meant the arrival … Read More…

Another Beautiful Sunset (Time Lapse Video + Photos)

Back to back gorgeous sunsets on 8/8/13 and 8/9/13. What more could a photographer ask for? I was out riding my bike at the time. I didn’t have my tripod with me, so for the video I just steadied my camera on my bicycle’s seat cushion. The angle was actually pretty good at accenting the sunset, so I’m not disappointed. Photos and videos are below. I captured some pretty cloud scenes before the sunset as well. It was definitely great to experience. Feel free to share this article around! … Read More…

European Garden Spider vs Green Lacewing (VIDEO)

Above are a couple of images, the left one is a thumbnail image from the video itself, and the right image is a higher resolution image I snapped of the spider. You can even see the web reflecting in that shot. Below is a video I captured of a European Garden Spider in a web near the light at the entrance of the apartment’s laundry facility. The blue hue is front the flashlight I used to enhance the light so I could get a clearer shot, as I did not have my tripod with me at the time. I had noticed several spiders around the light, so I decided to film this one, and I’m glad it’s the one I chose. I just got ready to press the record button when a Green Lacewing flew into the web. In the video I capture the action as the spider makes it’s way down to it’s potential meal and intercepts it. Not extremely exciting, but it was a lucky shot anyway. Enjoy … Read More…
