3 Rainbows, Shelf Cloud, and a Sunset

7/15/14 – While under the influence of an unseasonably cool trough over the US, some showers and even a few thunderstorms developed within it’s cold pool. I had seen this coming for a few days prior thanks to the computer models, so I scheduled a bicycle ride for this day. I was hoping to see at least some halfway decent structure, and a rainbow. What I got was much more than that. I found all sorts of beautiful scenes, including 3 different rainbows, each one better than the last, a surprise shelf cloud, and some great nature and agricultural scenes.

I began my day with a heavier rain shower, and I was able to get some video of that, and also my best action shot of rain falling ever. Later, I went cycling. My bike ride started off pretty well, saw a rain shower passing through, in the process of dying, but still created a nice scene. But it wouldn’t get really beautiful until I went further north. I found some rolling hills of corn fields, and just a gorgeous sky. I also found a large pond and found several different things to photograph there, including ducks, trees, cloud reflections, flowers, and some neat discs on a power pole.

I also took the opportunity to go to some places I’ve never been before. One of those places appeared to be a Christmas tree farm of sorts, and I found lots of great new viewing spots for weather spotting and sky photography. Sometimes it pays to get off your usual routes and go explore some new regions!

Once I got in position to photograph the approaching rain showers, I was treated to a beautiful display of color from not only a vivid rainbow, but also clouds illuminated by the sun’s light. Definitely more than I had expected to see, and boy was I thankful! I shot as much footage as I could. I only had one camera on me, the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS. It performed wonderfully.

All in all, it was a great evening full of gorgeous scenes. I shot time lapse of the rainbow, the sunset, and also the shelf cloud. All of my footage can be found below, beginning with my video footage, followed by a collection of photos from the day. As always, enjoy, and feel free to share!
