Nebraska Chasing 5/27/12

Left image is of a supercell with a nice wall cloud. Middle and right images are screen shots of the stream showing the gustnadoes. Another successful day of chasing in Nebraska. We started the day off with cumulus clouds as usual. We were playing around on old farm roads, waiting patiently for initiation. We all danced for donations to Sexy And I Know It by LMFAO and Mike Phelps developed a new dance move. The Phelps Flop. He took a spill while attempting a moon walk it appeared, it was difficult to tell because we were all laughing so hard. He injured his elbow pretty good but he was alright. Once cumulus started gathering we took off chasing. We got under this one batch that looked really good, and followed it for many miles as it grew. We were treated to some mammatus, a nice updraft base, and a nice rain/hail core. We drove through some hail, following another chase vehicle which is pictured below. Our storm finally matured and … Read More…

Nebraska Chasing 5/26/12

The day began in Denver, CO. We were anticipating storms to develop in Nebraska, so we tried to head out early to intercept them. This would not go exactly as planned though. We ended up taking a tour through Denver International Airport, and Mike left his iPhone at the 7-Eleven by accident. We all thought for certain that Mike’s phone was doomed, but thanks to some teamwork, and a $100 reward set for the phone, it was recovered, without any damage! That, combined with the unintentional airport tour had us running behind schedule, but we still made pretty good time. We were out in the fields observing some cumulus, when one cell finally decided to take off. We followed that small storm cell, assuming it would gain strength. It showed promise for sure. Had a decent base to it, though it was high due to high LCLs. We still had faith in it. We chased it for a while, getting underneath it to sample some hail. We got into some … Read More…

Garden Of The Gods 5/25/12

On May 25, 2012, we toured Garden Of The Gods located in the city of Colorado Springs, CO. This was a spectacular experience. The color contrast of the area was an amazing sight to behold. The rock formations, stunning, and the weather was perfect. We toured the whole park, then went up into the mountains and go a great view of Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs, and the surrounding area. It was an awesome experience, one I would definitely do again one day. We spent basically the entire day up there, with no storms to chase nearby, this was definitely a nice alternative. We were over 9,000ft up at one point. The reddish color to the rocks and dirt was accented nicely by the sun as it set as well. Below is a collection of images from the tour through Garden Of The Gods and up into the mountains, including images of Pikes Peak. Click any image thumbnail for larger view. We were treated to a lovely sunset over the mountains … Read More…
